“Before joining MDH, I worked in hospitality and retail while studying for my BA (Hons) Business and Management. I wanted to get my foot in the door in accounting, so I applied to be an Accounts Technician at MDH. The interview was successful, and I started shortly after. My role as an Accounts Technician included clients’ bookkeeping and VAT support, Self Assessment preparation, and dipping in and out of administration support duties.
I quickly developed within my role and I gained enough client exposure to progress with my accounting journey at MDH. The company had paid for my AAT course and supported me with my AAT studies; whether it was taking over client accounts for the day or giving me insights on the course, the team and Michael were there every step of the way.
Enrolling on this course meant I would be able to provide varied services and ensure our client portfolio was benefiting from expert business advice. For clients, it’s important they go to professionals they can trust. In this case, the experience wasn’t enough, but the necessary qualifications meant our clients would always be in very good hands.
I was AAT qualified in 2016 and I felt that I had gained valuable knowledge to be a better member of the accounting team. It was very rewarding! As I completed this, I knew there would be an opportunity to enrol for my ACCA exams in the future and I would be eligible to be exempt from some exams, as the AAT qualification had covered this.
Fast-forward to a few years later: I was ready to take my ACCA exams and become a certified Chartered Accountant. This course teaches you everything you need to know about financial knowledge and business acumen.
Some of the modules I covered which were different to AAT:
Becoming fully qualified was an exciting opportunity, as it enhanced my personal development. Passing my ACCA exams led to my role being changed to Client Manager. I felt at this stage I had been exposed to a range of client portfolios from small to medium-sized businesses. Having gained this experience, it allowed me to build great client relationships and further develop interpersonal skills.
I remember a time when a client needed accounting services to cover for maternity leave and they were really happy with what we provided; I ended up being permanent for a secretarial company.
It started like this…
I went on-site to a client’s office monthly to complete bookkeeping and provide financial reports for the client, as well as the companies they provide secretarial duties for. These reports were regularly reviewed, compared with budgets and referred to at AGMs. I also prepared accounts that were to be audited by a third party.
What worked well between the client and me is that we both pay great attention to detail, and she found it refreshing to find someone who was able to complete multiple tasks set without complication. I was always open to client suggestions and provided as much support as possible, including the transition accounting software used from desktop to cloud accounting for all the companies.
I created various customised reports on Xero accounting software, including the use of budget manager, which allows the client to run these reports as and when they need them, directly from the software.
To this day I still work closely with the client, preparing accounts and providing ongoing support. I have watched the company grow, whilst the owners have managed to reduce their working hours to enjoy more time with their family.
I can say that what makes MDH different is the level of investment they have in their team and communication. At each stage of my career within MDH, I have always had someone there to support me. From internal mentors to Michael answering every question that I had, the open-door policy was very helpful.
Although I had progressed from Accounts Technician to Client Manager, the focus on proving excellent client care was the same. Whether its onboarding a new client or completing bookkeeping and VAT returns, we always go the extra mile.
I now play a role in supporting team members on a similar journey to mine, since progressing as a Client Manager. I’m excited about my future at MDH. I want to continue to build up my existing portfolio of clients that I currently manage, and hold more client meetings!”
