15. HMRC’s New Compliance Push: Why Good Records Matter More Than Ever

More powers, more data, more expectations

Budget 2025 gives HMRC:

  • Extra funding for compliance
  • Plans to modernise penalties for inaccuracies and late notifications
  • Stronger rules around uncertain tax treatments
  • A big push towards digital records and system integration

The direction of travel is simple: they expect your numbers to be right, real-time and well-supported.

What this means for your business

Sloppy bookkeeping, late filing or “rough guesses” are now much higher risk:

  • Penalties may be tougher
  • HMRC has better tools to spot anomalies
  • Banks and other agencies increasingly share data

Action steps

  • Invest in proper bookkeeping
Use solid cloud software and, ideally, a proactive bookkeeper. Don’t rely on spreadsheets and shoe boxes.
  • Get a quarterly review
Ask your accountant to review your numbers every quarter, not just once a year.
  • Document your tax positions
If you take a judgement call (e.g. on a grey area expense), document why and get advice.
  • Stay ahead of MTD and digital rules
Even if your start date has been deferred, it’s coming. The earlier you’re ready, the less painful it is.
