3. ISAs, Cash Limits and the Future of Tax-Free Saving

Why small business owners should care about ISA changes

Most small business owners have two hats:

  • You as business owner
  • You as individual investor or saver

Budget 2025 keeps the overall ISA allowance at £20,000 but introduces a £12,000 cap on cash ISAs from April 2027 (with some extra flexibility for older savers). At the same time, Help to Save is made permanent and the Government is exploring a simpler ISA for first-time buyers.

How this affects your money strategy

  1. Less room for cash, more need for decisions
You now need to choose how much of your £20,000 goes into cash vs stocks & shares or other ISA products.
  2. Inflation risk
Keeping too much in cash inside ISAs may feel safe, but over 5–10 years inflation can quietly erode your purchasing power.
  3. First-time buyer employees
If you employ younger staff, ISA changes and new first-time buyer products could be part of how you support their financial wellbeing.

Smart ways to use ISAs as a business owner

  • Split your ISA by purpose
    • Short-term safety (cash ISA): emergency fund
    • Long-term growth (stocks & shares ISA): retirement top-up, school fees, future house moves
  • Coordinate ISAs with pensions
Pensions are tax-efficient but locked away to at least age 55/57. ISAs can be your flexible pot. Use both rather than choosing one.
  • Don’t forget your partner’s ISA allowance
A couple can shelter £40,000 a year between them. That’s powerful over a decade or more.

Action steps

  • Review your current ISAs: cash vs investment split.
  • Decide how much cash you genuinely need (3–6 months’ household spending is a good starting point).
  • Plan how you’ll use your £20,000 allowance for the next tax year, don’t leave it to the last minute.
  • If relevant, share an explainer with your team so they understand how to make the most of their own allowances too.
