The Profit Blind Spots Costing You Money

When it comes to running your business, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day. You’ve got invoices to send, fires to put out, and customers to keep happy. But have you stopped to think about whether your business is as profitable as it could be? If not, you might be running blind—and it could be costing you.

Let’s explore some common profit blind spots and how to address them. These tips will help you unlock your business’s full potential and improve your bottom line.

Are You Running Your Business in the Dark?

Picture this: it’s nine months after your year-end, and you’re just now looking at your financial performance. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—but it’s a dangerous habit. By the time you’re reviewing last year’s numbers, it’s too late to change anything. Unless you’ve got a DeLorean handy, you can’t go back in time.

The solution? Regular monitoring. Management accounts aren’t just for large corporations—they’re your roadmap to success. Go a step further and pair these with financial forecasts and non-financial data. This way, you’ll have a full view of where your business stands and where it’s headed.

Do You Know What Drives Your Profit?

Profitability doesn’t just happen—it’s driven by specific factors. The first is turnover, which comes down to two things: the number of invoices you send out and the transaction value of each. If you’re not tracking these figures at least quarterly (preferably monthly), it’s time to start.

Next, take a hard look at your gross profit margin. This is where things are often won or lost. Are all your direct costs correctly allocated? If your accounting software has everything lumped into a general “expenses” pot, you’re missing the chance to optimise.

What About Your Overheads?

Growth often requires an upfront investment, so a rise in overheads isn’t necessarily bad—if it’s aligned with your growth strategy. The key is knowing how much you’re spending and whether it’s adding value. Analyse your overheads to identify waste and ensure they’re proportionate to your turnover.

Benchmark Your Way to Success

One of the most powerful tools in your arsenal is benchmarking. This allows you to compare your performance to other businesses in your sector—confidentially, of course. When I benchmarked my own accountancy firm, it was a game-changer. It’s not about outdoing others; it’s about using the data to refine your strategy and achieve your goals.

Have a Plan and Stick to It

All the analysis in the world won’t help if you don’t act on it. Create a clear plan for improving your turnover, gross profit margin, and overheads—and then follow through. If things aren’t going to plan, dig into the data to find out why and make adjustments. Profitability is a moving target, and continuous improvement is the name of the game.
